City of Scott Keeps Safe and Dry with MozyPro

With a population of over 8,000 and the upbeat motto "Where the West Begins and Hospitality Never Ends," the city of Scott, Louisiana focuses on the positive. But Scott is considered part of a hurricane zone, putting the city's data and services at risk during periods of violent weather. For years, the city's IT contractor maintained a tape backup of on-site storage. Although Scott has fortunately been spared from significant damage in recent years, after attending a government-oriented disaster recovery seminar, city clerk Donna Jumonville concluded that the tape backup would be too unreliable and difficult to use in the event of a loss. "We've been fortunate not to have any major damage from hurricanes recently, but when we saw areas all around us being damaged, we knew we needed to take better precautions," she says.

After discussing the situation internally, the City of Scott decided to switch from unreliable tape backup to the powerful, automated MozyPro solution. By shifting to cloud backup, the city eliminates the risks of on-premise storage falling prey to the same disaster that can wipe out computers. "We no longer have to worry about whether backups are being performed—we just depend on Mozy to take care of it," she says.

Since adopting MozyPro, the city hasn't endured any dangerous weather beyond severe winds, but Jumonville did lose a hard drive on her computer, which was quickly restored. "The longest part of the process was waiting for the IT consultant to bring the new hard drive," she says. "I was down for less than an hour after that."
